What kind of engineering job are similar to what you do in school?

March 17th, 2010

I went into building commissioning and I hate it. I would really like a job where I just sit at a desk and solve equations. Anything like that? I studied mechanical engineering and my favorite subject was dynamics.

I had to drop out of college (Computer Science major) because it was interfering with my education too much. That was 1979, and I was at the University of Minnesota. They were using punched cards at the time. I had better equipment at my job as a computer programmer.

I think things have improved greatly since then.

Sounds like you need something in engineering, that’s for sure! Mechanical, chemical, electrical, or even computer science.

Software development is the ultimate playground for your imagination. It’s lke working with thought-stuff. I’ve done lots of things, but I’d have to say programming is the most interesting and rewarding. You just don’t want to end up in a coding mill in a windowless cubicle. So much development is farmed out to India, I don’t know if it’s a great career choice.

But it is fun!

Good luck to you.
