“In The Beginning” Internet Marketing At Home

February 28th, 2010

A lot of us need to raise our income but second jobs won’t work because of the usual restraints on our time. Work, family and many other responsibilities literally devour us. Incessant increases in living cost wipe out our bank accounts, forcing many of us to live from paycheck to paycheck.

Internet marketing can be a answer to this dilemma. Anyone can learn to make a little extra income online. Under these circumstances the convenience of being able to work at home, anytime you want, is very attractive. Many people are already making additional money online. Some are making a full time income. You can too! With the right motivation combined with proper guidance you will see results sooner than you think.

“Were do I start?” you ask. That is the purpose of this article. Proven methods that bring results. No hype here. Internet Marketing is hard work but can be very rewarding. We encourage you to give it a try. Work at your own pace a little each day and you will see results.

When first starting out, an easy way to expose yourself to the IM (internet marketing) world is to sign up for other marketer’s newsletters and free offers. Your in box will start being a source of info to help you get your head wrapped around what IM is all about. Sort your mail or coordinate it in a way that works for you so you can come back to these at a later date for review and ideas.

I personally set up a filter for each newsletter so they skipped my inbox and were directly sorted into folders. This saves a lot of time and allows you to determine what is worth reading and what is just sales pitch and hype.

A dependable Internet Marketer will offer you tips and ideas of value so after saving a group of his news letters you will see an overall pattern of value or worthlessness. Once you determine this you can choose if you will stay subscribed or not.

Down the road if you ever decide to produce your own opt in mailing list for your own IM business these files will be valuable to you. You will have in front of you examples of quality newsletters, tips and offers to model your own list building campaigns after.

A word of caution: Don’t be taken in by every offer that comes along. Proceed cautiously and give yourself some time to sort things out. Remember, if a “deal” sounds to good to be true it probably is. As you study and take note you will be able to discern what is genuine value. There are multiple paths to IM success and this process helps you to determine what is right for you.

IM is hard work and there are no “get rich quick” strategies that actually work. Say away from these scams or you will be robbed of your hard earned money and worse, your valuable time. Pursue your IM education a little each day an you will defiantly see progress

The biggest mistake is to commission a website from a web designer who knows nothing about how users and search engines actually behave. No web designer will actually admit that they are ignorant of these behaviors but almost all of them are.

Only one in thousand new websites are designed for users and search engines, the vast majority are designed only for the client. They may look nice (sometimes!) but they don’t actually work. They are not search engine friendly and do not stand a chance of appearing high in the listings. If users do find the site and can’t see exactly what they are looking for in the first couple of seconds they will just hit the back button.

To avoid this very common mistake it is essential to find a designer who is up to date on SEO and user behavior studies. There are very few!

They believe they can earn a lot of money in very little time and with very little effort. They do not have a plan and jump from one business opportunity to the next. They believe the hype that fill up their mailbox. They do not focus on something they know about. They do not invest the time and money required to do it right.

The failure to modify, and test.

You MUST, and I do mean MUST… Test your strategies, looking at the results, and then make modifications again and test again.

Also, most people come into the business with the theory, I’m going to start making $10,000 this month. Unless they have a huge budget to start with, it’s not going to happen.

Internet marketing is a game of education, practice, testing, and as my fiancee tells me "Try and Try Until Success".

I spend a fair amount of money on education every month, simply because I don’t want to learn all of it by trial and error.

But even with everything I’ve learned, I still test, and test, and test.. and try new things, and change that, and keep on keeping on..

They make many of the mistakes mentioned above (and below), namely: they think it’s going to be easy to make money online; they think they don’t need to test what they’re doing; they’re too easily distracted towards the next big thing; they try and run a ‘how to make money online’ website when they have no experience of making money online.

The number #1 mistake is that they don’t build a website that people want to visit - they don’t get traffic - before they start wondering how to make money.

    Not knowing their business.

A lot of people are lured into the internet business because of certain ebook that they read that promises millions. So they end up losing time, money, and energy.

Are you doing this web business because it will produce tons of money or are you in this business because you like doing it and eventually helping people with what you can do?

Start a plan. A business plan. You will be held accountable for the plans that you make for your business. This also gives you a metric for which to gauge yourself.

Give yourself mini milestone to accomplish. That will create what I call mini-successes. Which in turn will create momentum for you.

Internet marketing takes some planning and understanding of what you have to offer. Marketing is just one part of the whole equation.

    Research. Research. Research.

If you expect to get one million dollars by not working (as most of those internet ads says), think twice. As most of the answers dictate, it will take work. That’s why you need to be in business because you like doing it not because of the money. In the end, if you do it for money, you will not get any satisfaction.

I would say the biggest mistake is not using free PR tools rather than paying for expensive ads. You can’t afford expesive ads at first. Doing free promotion online and taking advantage of PR in the local news and to your friends can help the word of mouth spread without spending all your seed money. The blog below writes about online marketing ideas and resources too.
