How do you write an impressive resume without job experience?

November 30th, 2009

Hello, I’m currently 18 and I haven’t worked in ANYWHERE during my entire life…
Right now I’m in college and I feel like i need to get a part-time job but I’m kinda nervous because so many of my friends already have jobs and it would be so humiliating if i failed at this. Do you think there would be still a job left for me? How should I write my very first resume?

Writing resumés gets easier with more experience, but to make them look good isn’t that hard. If you have Microsoft Publisher, I am pretty sure they do have template that you can simply fill out. All you really need to do is include your name, contact information, and clubs or activities you have or are participating that might relate to the job you are applying for, and some references. To be honest, you probably won’t need a resume for a part time job, mainly because these are usually jobs as waitresses or cashiers. If you go to your local grocery store or restaraunt, you can find out if they have an application for you to fill out, and you can ask the manager that is hiring if he would like to see a resumé. If that is the case, then you know you should just make one, and it shouldn’t be too hard. Here is a basic outline of what you should definitely include:
Your Full Name:
Objective (what you are applying for):
Why you should get the job (emphasize good traits, and mention bad traits that can be seen as something positive such as "sometimes i get too focused on what I am doing and might not notice a customer asking for help". Try to stay away from bad traits, though):
Activities or Clubs (or in your case, a fraternity you may belong to):
Anything that may count as experience (even just watching your sisters when you were little or doing dishes at a large family party. Make sure that this can relate to the job you are applying for):
References (people who owe you a favor and will put in a good word for you. Be sure to ask them before you use them in your resumé and include their phone number and address.):

At the moment, that is all I can think of that you would need on a resumé, but like I said, most jobs that involve physical labor (such as bagging groceries or serving food) don’t require a resumé, but they might require an interview. If this is the case, be sure to remain calm and confident, look your best (no matter where you are applying), and arrive on time, if not 5 minutes early.

Good luck finding a job (:

    1) Yes there will be a job for you. It takes awhile to find it and you will have to start low.

    2) Resume is for people to list there professional accomplishment. You have no professional accomplishment so no need for resume. Luckily, most jobs that you will apply for don’t need a resume.
So just go in and ask to speak to hiring manager.

    Agree with tadpole:

You do not need a resume to get a job working at the local coffeehouse or a department store. When you go get application to these kinds of places, since you don’t have work experience, you will want to include anything that was somewhat like work. Any high-up positions you’ve held or any experiences that prove you’re a hard worker or a team player. Most importantly, you’ll need good references.

First of all, i am also 18, going to college, and looking for a part time job so i know where you are coming from.

Speaking from experience in updating resume databases and resumes in general: Write a resume without a job experience (don’t listen to tadpoleinspace :) - more specifically about #2). A resume is not just about job experience.

You have two options: writing from scratch or using a template. Since you are typing your resume for the first time, I recommend using a template (more details below).

However, if you choose writing from scratch, here are the sections i recommend: Education, Skills (computer, language, etc), volunteer experience, and certifications.

With education, list high school only.

I updated a company’s resume database for two summers in a row and the sections above are what i saw the most. Later, if you still have questions, try going to monster.com (they have really good resume advice and templates). Or you could try googling "resume templates" for resume templates.

    I hope this helps.
